I hadn't listened to Holding Absence before I heard these two tracks so I wasn't really sure of what to expect, but god damn I had such a pleasant surprise. The Cardiff five piece could be described as melodic come post-hardcore, but they definitely seem to have mastered the art of mixing genres to create their own unique sound. Holding Absence released their first two singles 'Immerse' and 'Luna' in 2015 via Dreambound, which was an amazing starting point for them as both singles received a lot of positive feedback from new-found fans all over the world and landed them in the support slots for bands such as Being as an Ocean and Blood Youth, not to mention a number of their own headline tours and festival appearances.
The first song that I listened to was Dream of Me. It's a rare occasion that I will listen to a song and be utterly fascinated by it on the first listen, but this was one of those times. The intro is calm but weirdly eerie, I`feel like the song really draws you into it before blowing you away by bursting into a chorus that will be stuck in your head for days on end. Permanence also had a very similar effect on me and when I listen to these songs I get the most immense feelings of emotion come over me. Holding Absence have completely hit the nail on the head with their ratio of harsh to clean vocals, and calm riffs to heavier breakdowns, the transitions are smooth and are pieced together incredibly well. I really cannot wait to see how their sound will progress over the coming years as this really is just the start for them, and I'm certain that they have a lot more to show us.
I absolutely love the amount of support that new bands are getting from the scene, whether that be fans or other slightly more popular bands themselves, and I think that Holding Absence are going to become something very special and definitely ones to keep your eyes as the year goes on. I will definitely be trying to catch a show or two at some point very soon!
