If there is one thing Canvas are capable of, it's breaking your heart. The Bedfordshire based melodic five piece are still unsigned, but this is clearly no obstacle for them. Having already found themselves travelling all over Europe with names such as Acres, Dead Harts, Polar and In Archives they have settled very well into the scene, and already have a pretty impressive amount of support and followers behind them. Canvas released the single 'The End' in 2015, and things have been pretty quiet since then in terms of new music- but of course they have still been very busy playing shows across the UK. New music from Canvas is well on it's way- as we know from the teasers that cover their social media- and honestly, it cannot come soon enough.  Lifesick is an incredibly hard hitting and emotive track, we hear vocalist Ricky Clarke state "Believe me I've tried, but I'm giving up on living". They have really put their hearts on the line with this release, and a lot of fans have found a great amount of solace in their lyrics. Lifesick is a gorgeous contrast of harsh vocals mixed with alleviating guitar melodies that fit perfectly together; especially when carried out as well as this. The tempo of the track remains pretty steady throughout, although the instrumentals become slightly more intense towards the end building up to a pretty powerful outro- which definitely leaves you wanting more when it does come to a close. This may only be the start of what could be something huge for Canvas, but they are definitely heading in the right direction. The band have clearly found a sound that they are comfortable with and it works extremely well for them, hearing new music is going to be a treat to say the least. Here's to hoping that what ever Canvas do release next will get the support and recognition that it deserves!

Hardcore giants Hundredth have been teasing new music for quite some time now, with singles Dead Weight and Victim being released later on last year we knew it wasn't going to be long before the band gave us the new album that we've been waiting so patiently for. Hundredth demonstrate a drastic transformation with Neurotic, vocalist Chadwick Johnson seems to have traded in his screams for tranquil cleans and the band have taken on a more ambient front. When you compare Hundredths huge 2011 release Let Go to their latest full length album Free you can tell that their sound was starting to evolve and the introduction of more clean vocals was already in place- but a lot of fans didn't expect to hear such an enormous contrast so soon

Neurotic draws you in right away with an intriguing grungy guitar rhythm which remains pretty steady the whole way through the track. There is no real build up into the chorus, but we do get a slight breakdown towards the end of the track which of course is still nothing like the traditional Hundredth style breakdowns that we are used to- but it's a very nice touch. There is no denying that whether it be his cleans or his screams Chadwicks vocals are incredible, and it's great to see them getting a chance to shine. As well as showing us the versatility of the band, the new sound is bound to draw in new fans so all in all this is a very positive step forward for Hundredth and the future of the bandIt's a brave move for any band to release music that is so different to their previous work but the guys have executed this track perfectly, and when the new album drops it deserves to be welcomed with open arms.

Hundredth will release their new album Rare on June 16th via Hopeless Records, and pre-orders are availible here at their online merch store. I'm really excited to see where this album cycle takes the band, Hundredth are definitely more than capable of pulling this release off and there is no doubt in my mind that Rare could end up being one of the biggest albums of 2017.

It's been a very long time coming with four years since their last release, but Paramore finally dropped the new single 'Hard Times' and the internet has gone into complete meltdown. I have to admit, the first time I listened to the track it didn't click with me straight away but even so I found myself playing it on repeat so I guess you can say I'm hooked now.

Going back to 2007 when the band released 'Riot' there is a very clear contrast in their sound, they have gone from being a traditional sort of alt rock/pop punk band to a more chilled out power pop group. This change is inevitable when you consider that the formation of Paramore has changed a great deal through the years and lost core elements with the departure of Josh Farro and Jeremy Davis. I definitely don't think these changes are a bad thing, Paramore are a band that will always be able to pull off whatever they decide to create and they have one of the most loyal and supportive fan bases to back them the whole way.

'Hard Times' has quite a nostalgic feel for me, hearing Hayley's voice takes me straight back to the 'Riot' and 'Brand New Eyes' era Paramore which you can't deny was when they were at their most influential stage. The song has a pretty distinctive 80's vibe to it, and this is also portrayed in the video with the use of bright colours in the form of neon lights, bright face paint and various abstract visuals throughout the video. The introduction to 'Hard Times' is super catchy with some light guitar riffs before the drums kick in, and the use of synths when going into the chorus definitely adds to the 80's touch. The song stays quite relaxed throughout, it's very light hearted and definitely gives us a good idea of what the rest of the album may consist of. Paramore seem to have found a sound that they are comfortable with and a lot of fans already seem to have taken very kindly to this track.

Paramore will release their new album 'After Laughter' on May 12th, pre-orders are available now and a European album release tour has also been announced. All in all, I really like this track I can't wait to finally hear more new music from Paramore and see what else they have in store for us!

Having only formed in early 2016, Healer are already hosting a number of headline shows and finding their feet filling support slots all over the UK for hardcore giants like Hundredth and Napoleon. The Bristol five piece seemed to have been welcomed into the scene with open arms. I was lucky enough to have seen Healer when they were supporting Hellions in Plymouth earlier this year, and having only listened to them briefly before the show I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. Their performance was filled with pure energy and emotion and I can't wait to see them progress as a band.

Healer released their debut EP 'Heal Me, I'm Hopeful' on May 10th 2016, which is an extremely intense and hard hitting first release. The six-track EP features the song Hollow which was actually the first Healer song I ever heard. I really like this track because of how fast-paced it is, yet it still has quieter bridges which is a really nice contrast, executed perfectly. Towards the end of the track there is a part that is recorded in spoken word, and this reminds me of bands such as Casey and Being As An Ocean who seem to be reigning over the hardcore scene at the moment. That being said, I think my favourite track off the EP would have to be Voices, I find myself going back to it time after time. Healer have found a sound that although relates closely to other bands that are in pretty high demand at the moment, still holds enough individuality for the band to stand out.

Like I said previously, I'm very glad that I got the change to see Healer while they are still quite new on the scene, supporting smaller bands is very important to me and our music scene would be dead without people like me and you picking up tickets. This is definitely just the beginning for Healer, and seeing how far they have come in such a short space of time shows just how much hard work and dedication has been put into the band. If you get the opportunity to see the band and pick up an EP from the merch desk then I highly recommend you take the chance, you won't be disappointed in the slightest.

I think Northlane may have exploded the internet   when they dropped Mesmer seemingly out of nowhere, I had heard rumours circulating for a few days before the drop but I can't say I was really expecting it. Releasing an album in this way, does have risks; it could mean that the album won't do so well in the charts and that it won't be covered as much by the media but Northlane said that this is their way of giving back to fans, by making the album available instantly and that no amount of awards or #1 spots in the chart could compare to the feeling they get by connecting with their fan base. Northlane released the singles 'Intuition' and 'Citizen' in the months before the album release, which both give us an impressive taster of what Mesmer is all about. I am a big fan of both of these singles, and although quite a few people on social media seem to have a different opinion on the 'new sound' that Northlane have taken on since the departure of vocalist Adrian, I think the band are going in a direction that not only really suits them but attracts a lot of new fans too.

The overall sound of the album doesn't differ much to their previous release Node, which definitely isn't a bad thing. Northlane seem to have adopted quite an electronic vibe, but we still get substantial breakdowns mixed with stunning cleans and astounding instrumentals. Marcus certainly knows how to use that voice to its best potential. A song that stands out most for me is Paragon, this song was written as a tribute to Tom Searle from Architects who passed away six months ago after losing his battle with cancer. Most of the lyrics in the song are actually Architects references which is a pretty surreal thing to hear when you're a big Architects fan like myself. Northlane state that Architects have always been one of their biggest influences, and this song really emphasises their relationship. Another song that I find myself going back to time and time again is Fade. I really like the structure of the song, it starts off with a grungy sounding bouncy melody which draws you in, and it has a really atmospheric vibe throughout. This song is slightly more relaxed than other songs on the album, and Marcus's cleans really stand out for me during this track.

I am really impressed by this album, and I think it is another strong release from Northlane that deserves just as much publicity as it would have gotten had it been released traditionally. Northlane seem to have found their feet and found a style that they are extremely confident with. When compared to older albums like Singularity there is a drastic change in their sound but I think any changes have been positive steps in helping the band to reach the prime position they are in today. I definately reccomend picking up this album and supporting the boys in Northlane, give this album the recognition it deserves!

When I found out that Casey would be releasing a video for Little Bird I was so excited, it's one of my favourite songs from Love Is Not Enough and I couldn't wait to see how they would envision it. This will be the fifth video that the band have released, and Casey videos are usually quite simple yet extremely emotional so I was excited to see how this song was portrayed, with it already being a very touching song for me. I was fascinated by the video from the get go, although at first it did take me a while to get into it and to try and make some headway on understanding the thoughts behind it.

The video starts off in a pretty dark and dishevelled room that looks like it could be a pub basement or something of that sort, littered with beer bottles and a beaten up looking arcade machine. The lighting in the opening scene is stunning, and puts across quite a doomy yet mysterious atmosphere. A theme that seems to crop up quite often during a number of Casey songs is hell, and I get the feeling that the red glow of the room could definitely symbolise this in some way. We then switch to a scene of a rather bare, dispirited looking Tom sat in the bath- at first it seems like he is trying to drown himself but he manages to pull himself back up from under the water. It's almost like the bath is the only place he may feel like he's not down in 'hell'. A few minutes later we see him entering a room complete with peeling and murky wallpaper that looks just like the waiting room of a doctors surgery which inhabits a few dejected looking people (including Casey's own drummer Max), or should I say patients. On the receptionists desk there is a cross-stitching with the words "yours is the only love I've ever known" written in a contrastingly happy pink coloured thread, which of course is an old link back to the Casey song 'Teeth'. The camera then flicks to clock hands going round with an accelerated speed, which signifies that the patients are simply just waiting for time to pass.

Turning back to Tom, we see him walking back out of the waiting room past a sign saying "Happiness this way" which returns to the previous room with the bath in it; further enhancing my thoughts that the bath is his only escape route from reality. The lyrics of this scene being "we would never make it out of the hell that we created" provides another link and even more justification for my thoughts. Nearing the end of the video the setting switches between the basement and the bath, signifying that Tom and the other patients are stuck in this routine day in, day out just searching for a temporary escape. As the song hits its most potent last verse we see tempers exploding in the basement, as an uneasy atmosphere is created between the patients as their repressed frustrations being let out, representing them reaching their highest points of desperation. The lyrics "I hope someday you will ache the way I ache" further represent this sense of melancholy despair.

This is just my own personal interpretation of the video, and I am by no means saying that this is what the video is meant to be about. I'm sure that other people may have a completely different understanding behind it. I did really enjoy trying to figure out this video for myself and I think Casey have done a tremendous job with it, not to mention whoever is responsible for all of the camera work and lighting effects. Another spot on video from Casey!

I hadn't listened to Holding Absence before I heard these two tracks so I wasn't really sure of what to expect, but god damn I had such a pleasant surprise. The Cardiff five piece could be described as melodic come post-hardcore, but they definitely seem to have mastered the art of mixing genres to create their own unique sound. Holding Absence released their first two singles 'Immerse' and 'Luna' in 2015 via Dreambound, which was an amazing starting point for them as both singles received a lot of positive feedback from new-found fans all over the world and landed them in the support slots for bands such as Being as an Ocean and Blood Youth, not to mention a number of their own headline tours and festival appearances.

The first song that I listened to was Dream of Me. It's a rare occasion that I will listen to a song and be utterly fascinated by it on the first listen, but this was one of those times. The intro is calm but weirdly eerie, I`feel like the song really draws you into it before blowing you away by bursting into a chorus that will be stuck in your head for days on end. Permanence also had a very similar effect on me and when I listen to these songs I get the most immense feelings of emotion come over me. Holding Absence have completely hit the nail on the head with their ratio of harsh to clean vocals, and calm riffs to heavier breakdowns, the transitions are smooth and are pieced together incredibly well. I really cannot wait to see how their sound will progress over the coming years as this really is just the start for them, and I'm certain that they have a lot more to show us.

I absolutely love the amount of support that new bands are getting from the scene, whether that be fans or other slightly more popular bands themselves, and I think that Holding Absence are going to become something very special and definitely ones to keep your eyes as the year goes on. I will definitely be trying to catch a show or two at some point very soon!

I have to be totally honest, despite being an extreme Architects fan myself I did find myself having to listen through this album a couple of times before I got a real feel for it but once I did there was no going back, I was hooked, and very very emotional. With each release you can hear Architects progressing and its fascinating to hear just how much their sound has changed from back in 2007 when they released Ruin.

The one thing that never changes with Architects is just how vocal they are about global issues and the state of the planet, whether it be environmental or government related and I really like that because they speak a lot of truths that I feel need to be said, and we as individuals may not have the power to get these messages across. I find that even though their music is not specifically written about struggles that we may face personally it's still very easy to find solace in the lyrics, and use them to better yourself in a way that is completely personal to you.

Opening the album with Nihilist was a genius decision, with no introduction or build up we are drop kicked straight into an extremely powerful and intense mass of guitar riffs and raw vocals, before taking us back down into a slightly more calming bridge towards the end of the track. It shows you just what Architects are capable of, and gives a real strong taste for what the rest of the album consists of. I feel like Architects lyrics have a whole new depth to them since Tom Searle passed away and knowing that he wrote these lyrics that people still listen to religiously, day in day out just makes each song that bit more emotional. A song that really demonstrates what I mean by this is Gone With The Wind and the line "A sickness with no remedy except the ones inside of me."

Architects have definitely found a sound that no band will ever really be able to compete with, it's so unique and so recognisable. The added layers and almost atmospheric sound effects that are used within songs never fails to strike a nerve inside me and leave me speechless. It would obviously be impossible for me to pin down one favourite track but I have to say that Memento Mori has a very special place in my heart (and on my skin- if you follow me on my social media you will know that I recently got a Memento Mori tattoo).

In my eyes Architects have never had a bad release, each album just helps to shape them more and more into the band that they are today, and even though a lot has happened in the last 6 months they haven't let it stop them, they keep fighting back each and every day and for that they inspire me even more.  If you can't tell, I am a HUGE fan of this album and everything this band has ever created. All Our Gods Have Abandoned us is without a doubt one of my top albums of 2016, and honestly Architects deserve all the success in the world.

Without a doubt, While She Sleeps are back. With only three singles released so far from their latest album 'You Are We' (due to be released on April 21st) in my mind it is already a very strong contender for album of the year. Silence Speaks starts off with a pretty tranquil guitar melody, with harsh vocals layered over the top building up into to the first verse. The chorus in this song particularly stands out to me, I love the way that the main guitar riff and backing vocals harmonise together, and it gets stuck in my head for so long afterwards. When I go and see While She Sleeps in April I'm sure that hearing this live for the first time is going to be an experience I won't forget.

Honestly it did take me by surprise that Oli Sykes was featuring in this song, but I think his voice fits in extremely well and he brings something quite exciting to the song, not to mention it will undoubtedly attract a wider audience. I really like how we get the rawness of Oli's vocals, and then it transitions straight into an extremely chilled out bridge before breaking into the guitar solo. Another thing I love about While She Sleeps is that their sound never seems to change too much. We still get that traditional 'sleeps-ey' sound, with clear links back to previous albums yet somehow you can still tell how much they have evolved and are progessing incredibly as a band.

I have heard nothing but love for the singles that have been released so far, While She Sleeps clearly have an extremely supportive fan base and I really cannot wait to hear the rest of this album, I'm certain that it is going to be extremely special and one of their best releases to date.

With this being my first time seeing Architects since the passing of Tom Searle, I was apprehensive as to whether I would be able to make it through the night and keep myself held together. This was an extremely special show for me, and one that I won't forget. The atmosphere was incredible and it really did feel like we were all there to not only support one another, but to show our support to the rest of the band too.

I don't think there were any two bands that were more deserving of the support slots for this tour. Stick To Your Guns and Bury Tomorrow are two of the most hard working and dedicated bands around, not to mention the insanely supportive fan bases that they bring along with them. This was my first time seeing  a whole Stick To Your Guns set from start to end so I was really excited to see how they fared, and I was not disappointed in the slightest. They certainly know how to get a crowd moving. Having seen Bury Tomorrow a fair few times before I knew that they were not going to let Architects down either. They have an insane amount of stage presence and you really can tell that playing shows for us and being able to interact with us during and after the shows means absolutely everything to them. Their set-list consisted of a few older songs too and it was great seeing how many people were singing along to them as well as just their newer music. The bands on this tour have such a passion for people and our environment and the heart warming speeches that each frontman gave during their performances only led me to believe this even more. Emotions were definitely high that night, as I'm sure they were for each date of the tour.

Finally it was time for Architects to take to the stage. The room filled with smoke, lights dimmed and the crowd starting chanting, it was an absolutely insane atmosphere. Architects opened with Nihilist and the crowd went absolutely wild, it was a phenomenal way to show us that they are nowhere near ready to back down just yet. The set-list for the evening consisted of songs from each era, which luckily for me did include songs from their 2009 release Hollow Crown, including Follow The Water which if you know me personally you will know that it's one of my all time favourite Architects songs. Hearing it live will never cease to leave me speechless. It was nearing the end of the show and Sam called for the audience to be quiet for a moment so that he could say a few words. It's remarkable how quickly the room went from total chaos to each individual person giving Sam their full attention.  Of course I knew what he wanted to talk about, so I proposed myself as best I could. Sam then thanked everybody on behalf of the whole band for coming out and showing their support during the heartache that they're going through, and told us how amazed Tom would be if he could see how many people showed up that night, and on every other night of the tour too. He then said that the reason they didn't cancel the tour was because they would have felt that they were letting Tom down by giving in, and they wanted to play the shows in memory of him and everything that he has ever done for the band. I couldn't help but notice the empty space on the stage that night, although Josh Middleton from Sylosis did an incredible job of filling in for Architects.

One of my friends actually managed to grab a set list at the end of the show which no matter how old you are is still a pretty neat little souvenir of seeing a band live, and of course he very kindly gave it to me and it now takes pride of place on my wall next to various other gig tickets and signed bits and pieces. At the moment Architects don't seem to be holding back one bit and they keep announcing new tours all over the world which is wonderful to see. I'm uncertain as to whether they will carry on writing, producing or even playing any more shows once they finish touring the new album, but I know that whichever decision they make won't be taken lightly, and as devastating as it would be I would fully respect their decision if they do decide to call it a day. All things aside it was god damn emotional, but incredible evening. It was a whole new Architects experience for me and each time I see them they only make me more and more proud of how far they've come. This was definitely a show that I'll hold close to my heart, and one that I will never forget.

I first discovered Acres a little while ago when they were announced as main support for the upcoming Hellions tour in the UK later on this month. As I am already attending the Plymouth date of this tour I thought it was only fair I check out Acres so that I don't fall into my usual habit of seeing a band live but not really getting into them until after I've seen them, which is always pretty annoying. Somehow I definately don't think that will be the case this time. I think it's wonderful seeing a smaller UK band being able to tour with a band from the other side of the world, all working together to promote eachother and create a network of fans all over the globe.

The first song I heard by Acres was 'In Sickness & Health' (highly recommend giving it a listen) and it really struck a chord inside me, I couldn't stop listening to it. From the emotive lyrics, insanely elegant guitar melodies and the contrast between harsh and clean vocals, Acres certainly seem to have found a balance and a sound that suits them down to the ground, and as proved with the release of their new single 'Gloom' it seems asthough this is only going to keep improving. The song starts off with an extremely fierce verse with barely any introduction or build up, but yet the song is still so full of raw emotion and you can really tell how passionate the band are, and how much hard work they have put into creating this. The way that Acres manage to transition between the 'all guns blazing' attitude through to the cleaner chorus and bridges is nothing short of stunning, and I really can't wait to see what they have lined up for us in the coming months.

Acres will release their new EP 'In Sickness & Health' on February 24th, and I know I'll definately be keeping my eyes and ears open. I feel that this really is only the beginning of a huge journey for them, and one that I hope to in some way go on with them whether it be buying tickets to shows or buying their music, they have my full support.

Formed in 2009, Cheltenham post-hardcore 5 piece Crooks are a band that have grown so quickly on me, I find it hard to listen to a playlist which does not contain at least one song by the boys. On March 2nd 2012 they released their first EP 'Nevermore' which was recorded and produced by the band themselves, followed by a two track EP named 'Still' in 2014. It was in April 2015 that all of their blood, sweat and tears seemed to have paid off as they signed to Equal Vision Records and then followed on to release their debut album 'Are We All The Same Distance Apart'. Since the release of this album Crooks have played numerous shows and festivals around Europe and found themselves sharing the stage with highly acclaimed names like Moose Blood, Neck Deep and Boston Manor.

With the release of 'Are We All The Same Distance Apart' Crooks are giving us an extremely heart wrenching album. Each song on the album contains absolutely stunning vocals- Josh's vocals are pretty much breathtaking and how he manages to reach some of those pitches I will never know. May Be is one song that stands out for me in particular; it really pulls on the heart strings and makes sure that you're not completely dead inside. The contrast of the piano is almost soothing compared to the rest of the album, giving you a moment to reflect and really take in what you are listening to. The first song I ever heard from Crooks was 'A Few Peaceful Days' and I remember instantly being fascinated by just how well they manage to transition from fast paced drum beats and harsher vocals to the melodic bridges with heavenly choruses. As hard as it is to choose a favourite, another song that I always find myself going back to is Dear Reader as I think it really shows off all aspects of the band and what they are capable of.

I knew straight away that Crooks were a band that were going to be around for a while, and with new single '.NEVAREHT' (highly recommend giving it a listen) being released in October last year I'm sure that there is a whole new album just around the corner. I honestly can't wait to see what they bring to the table next, I'm truly amazed by this band and this album really does hold a special place in my heart. Crooks deserve all the success in the world.

Where do I begin? First of all let me introduce you to Casey. Formed in 2014, the South Wales melodic 5 piece seem to have taken the scene by storm. 2016 was a huge year for the band, they released their debut album 'Love Is Not Enough' and toured across Europe with the likes of Being As An Ocean, Capsize and Northlane.

2015 saw the release of their first EP 'Darling' which had a phenomenal response from new found fans from all over the globe which led the band to their rapid success and found them being signed to Hassle Records. With new music already in the works, upcoming shows plotted all over Europe and an ever growing fan base there is no doubt in my mind that 2017 is going to be anything but huge for Casey.

Love Is Not Enough is an absolutely breathtaking album to say the least, with lyrics that are sure to hit hard and some of the most stunning guitar melodies that will send shivers down your spine. The first song that was released from Love Is Not Enough was 'Ceremony' (which also features Michael McGough of Being As An Ocean). When I heard this song I was hooked from the get go, it drops you straight into it like a Casey style slap in the face and gives you an extremely good taste of what the rest of the album consists of. It gave me very high expectations and in this case I most definitely was not disappointed.

Casey have not strayed far from the sound that we recognise from the previous Darling EP, yet the boys have somehow managed to step up their game tenfold. How? Who knows. The mix of harsh vocals and the soft guitar riffs are a mixture that go hand in hand together when executed as well as Casey manage to. For me, each song adds up to create an album that offers something completely original to other recent releases, and I think it would be almost impossible for me to determine a favourite, or a 'stand out' track. The band seem to have found a very personal way to connect with and reach out to fans through their music, and I think this is part of the reason that Love Is Not Enough has been such a huge success.

To sum it up without writing a whole new page full, this album is nothing short of a masterpiece and is most definitely in my top 10 albums of 2016. If you are yet to give the Casey boys a listen then let this be the motivation you needed because you will not regret it. Your collection NEEDS this.
